Photo I took of John Waters. I nearly shat my pants meeting him. I never get nervous, but this was the man that changed the way I see the world. Fantastic.

I heard today the Brendon, who put together zine Negative Guest List died. Screwed up stuff. I only ever drunk talked to him about how I thought he was doing cool shit. I only ever had a chance to photo his band Meat Thump once, never had a chance to see White Cop. Peace.

A few people have contacted me asking if Suncorp is using the ‘King Wally, ready to go under’ photo I took during the Brisbane floods, for the massive billboard near the Story Bridge.
So I just wanted to write this and clear it all up.
No, it’s not my photo.
No, I had nothing to do with it at all.
This is what happened as far as I know.
Todd Williams, operations manager for advertising agency - George Patterson Y&R, contacted me a couple of months ago to say several of the agencies staff had seen the King Wally photo and were interested in using it for a Suncorp insurance campaign.
Quite a few nonprofit organisations have contacted me to ask about using the photo, and I have always been totally happy to let them.
I wasn’t going to give it to a major ad agency and bank; so I asked about money and they offered $500. I thought the offer pretty rubbish, they returned with an offer of $2000.
I said I would sleep on it.
That night Jess and I talked about the GPYR offer and decided it was not something that would make me feel comfortable. For me, that photo was a bit of a lighthearted moment in a time when we all needed a laugh.
After I posted the photo during the floods, I received messages for people all over world praising the spirit of the people of Queensland.
Can you put a price on that?
I admit we did discuss taking the money, keeping half and donating the other half, but it still felt wrong. The idea that somebody would be convinced to buy insurance because they had some emotional connection to that photo made me feel pretty shit. Misery money.
So I rang Todd the next day and declined the offer.
I hear about the billboard from friends, and write George Patterson an angry letter. Get a reply explaining I was mistaken and GPYR had managed to source a photo taken around the same time by a News Ltd photographer, so copyright was purchased from newspix (link to photo was included). They just cropped it and changed the colour a bit.
Does the photo look like mine?
Well, yeah, I think it does.
Does the fact that I was the person that tweeted it sending it viral and making it a “twitter sensation” mean I own the image?
Nah.
Do I think it’s right for anybody to profit from using the associated memories of the photo?
What do you reckon.
As I wrote before, I was always happy to share the King Wally photograph with any nonprofit organisations especially if it was used to help raise funds for flood victims.
Now I feel a bit of the good feeling associated with the photo has disappeared and it has kinda become a tool or product.
From what I know the photographer that supplied the photograph for the billboard will be paid under $200 by newspix .
Be interesting to know how much the campaign cost Suncorp?
It would make me pretty happy if anybody driving past it, maybe considered the people still struggling to get their lives back on track after losing so much.
The life of a freelance photographer is sometimes like pissing in the wind.

I have been SO slack lately. Moved to a regional part of Australia for a new job and have been a bit busy plus not the biggest underground music scene (that I can find yet).
Job is awesome and is all about unearthing regional artists and giving them a voice, something I really believe in. So it’s all worth it. People have different values here, it really makes me sad that Brisbane is becoming so sterile and money obsessed. I hope it still can have a scene.
Might try to keep blogging, will see how I go.

Kitchens Floor. New line up (drums bass). I had been drinking a shandy or two this day, it was hot. Think Matt had had a shandy or two as well. I have no idea what is going on, but I kind of like it.

Sounds a bit different now live, hard to explain? Bigger sounding?

Thee Oh Sees. Been off the internet. Thought I would just quickly put this up before it gets to old, I was really on the fence about Oh Sees, the over the top reverb vocals is starting to spread itself around and could grow pretty tired pretty quick, but have to say they ruled live. Sloppy but tight (sure you can feel me on this).

Circle Pit. Really like the Circle Pit recordings, kinda like glam Mudhoney, this is the first time I have seen them live, not sure if I really got it quite as much. I like when a band is a bit like a gang and all floating along on the same wave length, wasn’t getting that vibe.

Assassins 88. Always good to see a band you know nothing about. 3 piece from Canberra is all I need to know, so good live, drummer tapes a mic into his mouth, bass player gets kicked repeatedly in the arse by some pal of his watching. Purchased the split 7 as soon as they finished.
Dream Damage, the label that has put out a cassette has made a DL www.dreamdamage.com/category/assassins-88/
Have some vid I will post sometime soon.
Too tired to be bothered doing anything.
